AOLI JOURNAL / BUYING GUIDE
What peak amps do—and do not—tell you about a jump starter
Peak-current figures are common in jump-starter listings. They help identify a model’s stated specification, but comparing equipment requires more than one headline number.

Read the rating in context
Confirm how the figure is described in the model documentation. Compare the stated vehicle battery voltage and engine application, rather than assuming that identical amp labels represent identical performance.
Consider the rest of the system
Cable design, supported battery system, operating temperature and the condition of the vehicle all matter. Capacity and USB charging ratings describe different functions and should not be treated as starting-current ratings.
Ask a vehicle-specific question
Share the vehicle details and intended conditions when requesting a model recommendation. Ask for the exact manual and confirm the model supplied before paying.
What to share with our team
- Battery voltage
- Engine fuel type and size
- Source of the current rating
- Operating limits and exact model
